Enjoy The Original Lake Life

Lake Bonavista homes for sale in Calgary are highly competitive, as Lake Bonavista isn’t just a neighbourhood, it’s a way of life that Calgary has been trying to replicate for over fifty years. Established in 1968, Lake Bonavista holds the distinction of being Canada’s first manmade residential lake community. The 52-acre lake, the resident-only beach, the tree-lined streets and the genuine sense of community — none of it has aged. If anything, it’s become rarer.

Tessa Blair has lived here since 2012. She doesn’t just sell Lake Bonavista homes — she skates on the lake, her kids swim in it every summer, and she knows every street in the community. When you work with Blair+, you get that knowledge alongside the full power of Sotheby’s International Realty. That combination is genuinely hard to find.

How Lake Bonavista came to be — and why it still stands apart

The story of Lake Bonavista begins with a developer willing to build something that had never been done before. E.V. Keith, founder of Keith Construction, had already changed Calgary’s suburban landscape with Willow Park — the city’s first golf course community. But Lake Bonavista was his most ambitious vision: a neighbourhood built around a lake, inspired by the residential lake communities he’d seen in California, transplanted into the heart of Alberta.

The challenge was significant. In the late 1960s, there was no regulatory framework in Alberta for building a manmade lake. No permits, no precedent, no blueprint. Keith Construction pressed on anyway — excavating the lake, diverting water from nearby Fish Creek, and building a community around it before the approvals were even in place. It was the kind of bold, get-it-done mentality that Tessa genuinely admires. She chose to live here partly because of it.

That entrepreneurial spirit is written into the DNA of Lake Bonavista. It’s the reason the community has an energy that newer lake communities — Mahogany, Auburn Bay, Chaparral — haven’t quite managed to replicate. Lake Bonavista was first. And in real estate, first matters.

Twenty minutes from downtown. A world away from the city.

Calgary is a landlocked city. Lakefront homes are hard to find within close driving distance, and even so, mountain lakes are COLD except in Lake Bonavista, where it absolutely does.

The centrepiece is the 52-acre lake, ringed by private beach access available only to residents. In summer, families are out on the water from morning until dark — swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. In winter, the lake freezes and becomes one of Calgary’s most beloved skating destinations. It is, quietly, one of the most remarkable things about living in this city.

There’s a second lake too. Lake Bonventure sits south of the main lake and is accessible only to waterfront residents — a more private, more secluded version of the lifestyle that makes the community so sought-after.

Away from the water, the community is equally well-served. Lake Bonavista Promenade — the neighbourhood’s small, centrally located shopping centre — has everything you need: Safeway, banks, local shops, and a neighbourhood pub that maintains the lake town feel. Four elementary schools, two junior high schools, and a community arena with two ice surfaces, a gymnasium, a dance studio, and a meeting room make this one of the most complete communities in SE Calgary. The C-Train station is within walking distance for most residents, putting downtown just twenty minutes away.

The original. The benchmark. Still the one everyone compares to.

When Lake Bonavista was developed in 1968, nothing like it existed in Canada. The idea of building an entire community around a manmade lake — complete with a 25-acre park, a 65-foot hill, and a waterfall — was genuinely radical. It worked so well that Calgary has been building lake communities ever since.

Lake Midnapore, Chaparral, Auburn Bay, and Mahogany — all great communities in their own right. All follow a template that Lake Bonavista created. The original benefits from something the others don’t have: decades of mature trees, an established community character, and the quiet confidence of a neighbourhood that has never needed to prove itself.

Homes in Lake Bonavista hold their value. Families move in and stay for generations. The HOA actively manages the lake and its amenities, ensuring the community looks as good in its sixth decade as it did in its first. That kind of stewardship is rare — and it shows in the property values.

Year-round recreation. A community that actually brings people together.

Lake Bonavista was designed with an assumption baked in: that the people who live here want to be outside. The lake, the park, the paths, the arena — everything is oriented around active family life.

Summer means paddleboarding at sunrise, family beach days, kayaking after school, and picnics in the park. Winter means hockey on the lake, figure skating at the arena, and tobogganing on the 65-foot hill. The community arena is home to one of Calgary’s most active figure skating clubs and a passionate local hockey community.

Walking paths run throughout the neighbourhood. Parks and playgrounds are well-maintained. The HOA takes its role seriously — this is a community where the amenities actually work, because the people who live here care deeply about keeping them that way.

For families looking for a place to put down real roots, Lake Bonavista has very few equals in Calgary.

The best time to buy in Lake Bonavista was twenty years ago. The second-best time is now.

Lake Bonavista doesn’t come to market often. When a home does become available — particularly one with lake access — it tends to move quickly and attract multiple interested buyers.

The current market in Calgary is balanced, which means serious buyers have more breathing room than they did eighteen months ago. That won’t last indefinitely. Lake Bonavista’s fundamentals — limited inventory, exceptional lifestyle, strong HOA, and proximity to downtown — make it one of the most resilient communities in SE Calgary.

Tessa watches this market every day. She knows when a home is priced right, when it isn’t, and when something worth considering is about to come available. If Lake Bonavista is where you want to be, the conversation starts here.

What it actually feels like to live here.

Living in Lake Bonavista means waking up to water. It means your morning walk takes you along the lake path, past neighbours you’ve known for years, with the city starting to hum somewhere in the distance. It means your kids learn to skate on the same ice their friends do, grow up swimming in the same lake, and develop the kind of community attachment that most people spend their whole lives looking for.

It’s lake country in a city. Cottage life without the drive. A neighbourhood with a genuine identity — one that was built into it from the very beginning, in 1968, by someone who dared to imagine something that had never existed.

Tessa chose to live here. Every day, she’s glad she did. If you’re thinking about making the same move or selling your home, she would genuinely love to talk.

E.V. Keith built something that outlasted him. That’s the point.

The legacy of Keith Construction in Calgary is visible throughout the southeast. Willow Park. Lake Bonavista. Communities built on the belief that where you live should enrich how you live. That philosophy didn’t just produce beautiful neighbourhoods — it produced communities that have retained their character and value for over half a century.

Lake Bonavista is the flagship. It remains, in 2026, exactly what E.V. Keith imagined: a place where city life and lake life coexist, where families build memories that last, and where the original vision is still worth more than everything that came after it.
